Construction set to begin at City's R84 million Rusthof Infill housing project

Construction is ready to start at the City’s new Rusthof Infill housing project. The project, which will provide opportunities to more than 380 qualifying beneficiaries, is located on three pieces of land in the Gustrow area of Strand and is expected to be completed by June 2027, if all goes according to plan. 

'This housing project is another example of the City's commitment to providing housing opportunities to the most vulnerable and enabling redress. I am particularly excited to see what innovations are incorporated into these homes in the weeks and months to come as they are constructed. The future of affordable housing begins here today. We look forward to building Cape Town, together.

'The construction work is for the first phase of this project, which consists of the major earthworks needed to enable the construction of houses and serviced sites. The project is inter-dependent on the completion of another city-project, the canalisation of the Sir Lowry's Pass River, which removes the hazard of future flooding events. This project has already kicked-off. The construction of the houses will start after the completion of the earthworks contract, to synchronise with the completion of the canal project.

'The City thanks the project teams and contractors for their hard work and dedication in helping us provide homes to the beneficiaries of this project. The City is doing everything it can to ensure beneficiaries receive their opportunities at our subsidised and affordable housing projects across the metro while ensuring staff and contractors are protected while on duty. We have enhanced security and increased monitoring at City housing projects so that we can deliver opportunities to some of the most vulnerable residents in the metro.

'We also thank the community for their ongoing support and we will do what it takes to deliver housing opportunities despite various challenges. The City urges the community to be on the lookout and to assist us by reporting any illegal activity at City housing projects in their areas. We are offering rewards of R5 000 for information leading to arrests of anyone targeting City housing projects across the metro,' said the City's Acting Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Alderman James Vos.

Beneficiaries of all City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and the City's Housing Needs Register to ensure that housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
